Traffic & Getting Around

Last updated: 2026-05-28

Conditions change quickly. Always verify road conditions, flight status, and transit times directly with the official source before you travel.

The Treasure Valley has grown faster than its road network for the last two decades, and it shows. Interstate 84 is the spine of the metro — connecting Caldwell, Nampa, Meridian, and Boise on its way to Mountain Home — and any incident on I-84 sends traffic onto surface streets like Franklin, Fairview, and Cherry Lane. State Highway 55 carries the McCall and Cascade weekend traffic in and out of the north end of Boise; State 44 (State Street) is the Eagle and Star route; State 21 climbs to Idaho City and the Boise Mountains. For the morning commute, plan for the I-84 bottleneck between Meridian and the Boise connector, and watch Idaho 511 for incidents before you leave the driveway.

Public transit in the Valley is run by Valley Regional Transit (VRT), with fixed-route buses in Boise and Garden City and the ValleyRide commuter network connecting Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, and Boise. The Bus on Demand pilot covers parts of Caldwell and southwest Nampa. For air travel, the Boise Airport (BOI) handles regional and national connections; FlightAware and the airport's own page give you live arrivals and departures. Idaho DMV handles licensing and registration, with offices in Ada and Canyon counties — most renewals can also be done online.

Gas prices in the Valley typically run a few cents under the Idaho state average and a bit above the national. GasBuddy is the go-to for finding the cheapest pump near you.
